Postcard - Seattle, Washington

"Government Locks, Seattle, Washington. These locks offer easy access for pleasure and commercial boats between the salt water of Puget Sound and the fresh waters of Lake Union and Lake Washington."

1970s, with a little bit of Ballard tossed in. I lived a few blocks away for part of 1979-1980 on Market St.

"Shilshole Bay and Marina, Seattle, Washington. With facilities to moor over 1,600 pleasure boats, this saltwater harbor is located near the Gov't Locks in Ballard. The canal connecting Puget Sound with Seattle's freshwater Lake Union can be seen in the distance."

Postcard - Seattle, Washington

"An interesting view of Seattle, Washington from the central business district across Lake Union toward the northern residential area. Showing on the right is the freeway, part of U.S. Highway 5, which runs from Mexico to Canada without a single stop sign."

1970s. I was living in the Ravenna/Bryant District (top right) at the time when Cranium Frenzy #1 was drawn in 1981.

Postcard - Seattle, Washington

"Seattle's unique Freeway Park acts as a lid over Interstate 5 Highway in the downtown business district. This beautiful park design, the first of its kind in America, incorporates a spectacular 32 foot (9.7 m) sculptured waterfall, over which 10,000 gallons (37,850 l) of water cascade per minute. Lake Union is in the background."

Late half of the 1970s.

Postcard - Seattle, Washington

"Space Needle and Mount Baker. Portions of the Seattle Center, Lake Union and the Monorail are seen in this dramatic photo of the World Famous Space Needle built in 1961 at a cost of $4 1/2 million dollars. The 600 feet high restaurant revolved in a 360 degree circle each hour permitting the diner to view the wonders of the Puget Sound country in comfort and luxury. No visitor will want to miss this experience."

1970s.

Postcard - Seattle, Washington

"Seattle, Washington's Gasworks Park, on the north shore of Lake Union provides an attractive recreational setting. In the background, the downtown business district."

Late 1970s, most likely. Too bad the postcard didn't include the crazy looking industrial ruins of the park.

During Norwescon 20 in 1997 at SeaTac the amazing Brad Foster was a guest of honor and several cartoonists hijacked him and took him to this park. I wasn't part of that crew but I did join the subsequent comix lunch. We all compared what we had studied in college to the reality of what we were doing now. I believe I was the only one in the large group who was actually employed in my academic degree (MLS, i.e., librarianship).
