Morty Comix # 2631

Morty Comix # 2631 was left in a strange sort of place. I discovered the booth seats in this excellent Olympia, Washington area restaurant had a slit that opened into a hollow space between booths. This particular restaurant looks out to Budd Inlet and I was afforded a view of the old St. Pete's Hospital on Oly's Westside where my brother was born.

KGY radio has been in the Olympia, Washington area since 1922. Their FM station is supposedly based right here in little McCleary, but we have no evidence of them being here and they don't seem to cover our local news with any investigative zeal. I wish they would.

But I do love seeing their weird building at low tide on Budd Inlet.

Postcard - Seattle, Washington

"A 23 1/2 ft. (7.15 m) long, 11,000 pound (4,989 kg) Killer Whale is a rare sight in Elliott Bay, with the downtown Seattle Business District in the background. Killer Whales travel Puget Sound and Strait of Georgia waters in families (pods) of about 12 to 20 whales."

1970s, probably about the same time as the infamous Sea World incident in Budd Inlet. Orcas still occasionally go as far south as Olympia in Puget Sound.

Postcard - Olympia, Washington

"Olympia, Washington. The State Capitol buildings may be seen at right center. Mt. Rainier stands as a sentinel in the distance."

1969? The present day WSDOT building looks like it is still being put together. Plus the Capitol Park Apts. have not been torn down yet.

On the left, Budd Inlet ends at the "Isthmus," while the northern portion of the Fetid Lake of Doom takes center stage. The steam plant, otherwise known as the caiman wintering area, can be seen on the shore at the right, conveniently next to the railroad tracks for regional distribution.

"TUMWATER. Here the Deschutes River cataracts into Budd Inlet, the most southerly point where ends the old Oregon Trail, arduous route of the hardy pioneers of the West with a determined disregard with British opposition to their settlement north of the Columbia River a small band of pioneers founded here in 1846 the town of New Market the first American community established on Puget Sound. The Indian name for the cataract was Spa Kwatl but in Chinook jargon it was Tumwater, meaning throbbing water which name New Market later adopted."

In the background is the long derelict bottling plant of the Olympia Brewing Company.

Budd Inlet, 4th Ave. Bridge, and on the horizon the old St. Pete's Hospital where my brother was born

Back then in the late 1950s, St. Pete's would not allow child visitors in the hospital. So I remember my uncle and aunt taking shifts watching me in their 1958 Chevy parked in the parking lot while I drew cartoons with my finger on the late November rear car window condensation as my sibling entered the world.

Olympia, Washington: The Fetid Lake of Doom bordered by the "Isthmus," upon which stands a tall building locals call "The Mistake By the Lake." In the background is Budd Inlet, site of the famous 1976 Sea World whale controversy. Also the former home of the Mothball Fleet.
