The Comix Files: Lynda Barry

Lynda and I actually corresponded quite a bit in the 1970s, but a lot of it vanished throughout my many moves in that era. However, a few bits have survived. These are from 1975-1979. Lynda had sent me a photo of herself, taken in 1975, and cut out her face for reasons mysterious.

As I recall the postcard was hand-delivered.

Postcard - Wilmcote, Warwickshire

"Mary Arden's House, Wilmcote. William Shakespeare's mother, Mary Arden, lived in this lovely Tudor farmhouse in the Warwickshire village of Wilmcote before her marriage to John Shakespeare. Situated about three miles from Stratford-upon-Aven, its barns now house a fine collection of old agricultural implements."

Postcard - Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire

"Elizabeth Knott Garden, New Place, Stratford-upon-Avon. Here is the site of New Place, purchased by Shakespeare in 1577. He lived here in retirement during the last six years of his life, and died here in 1616. Adjoining this site is the home of Thomas Nash, who married Shakespeare's grand-daughter."

Postcard - Bern, Switzerland

"Bern, view of the city and Alps, Switzerland. Bern is the capital of the Canton of the same name being on a lofty sandstone promontory, more than 1700 feet above the sea formed by the winding Aar, which surrounds it on three sides, and is crossed by two stone bridges, one of which is a magnificent structure upward of 900 feet long, with a central arch 150 feet wide and 93 feet high. Bern has an imposing appearance from a distance. The houses are massive structures of freestones, resting upon arcades. The corporate property of the city is very large, sufficient to defray all municipal expenses; provide the whole of its citizens with fuel gratis, and besides leaving a surplus for annual distribution among them."

Whew, that is one long postcard narrative.

I am guessing this dates between 1910-1914

Postcard - Madras, India

"Broadway - Madras"

1970s

A puzzling postcard. It was sent to me in 1980 with stamps from Sri Lanka affixed. But I am pretty sure this scene is from Madras, India, now known as Chennai.

Postcard - Vladimir, Russia
