Morty Comix # 2691

Dreamer, Buster, and Hettie seem unconcerned as I toss in Morty Comix # 2691 as an extra bonus as part of an order I got this weekend for original art (from Storm Warnings) and a packet of vintage City Limits Gazette issues. The whole package is headed Back East.

$175 - Original Art - Slim Chance and Fat Fate

The art for "Slim Chance and Fat Fate," the only story from the 1986 comic Storm Warnings that I like.

Set in Eastern Washington State, the visual metamorphosis tale includes Mukey the Mutant Membrane, porcupines, Orville, Thelma, a Morty the Dog coin, a deranged Mr. Zip, truck drivers, and the Acme Correspondence School of Bullfighting.

Felt tip on nonphoto blue, heavy stock paper is uneven, generally measuring 12 x 9.5 in. Seven pages. Some slight discoloration on the top non-art margins of p. 1-2. Page 1 title is actually taped on, which is strange since it doesn't appear to be covering anything. I detect a small amount of whiteout on page 5, panel 6.

$175 ppd.

$300 - Original Art - Rainmaker Painraker

"Rainmaker Painmaker" original art, first appeared in Storm Warnings (1986)

12 pages, nonphoto blue pencil and felt tip on light bond, 11.5 x 9 inches.

In good condition. No whiteout or paste-ups from what I can see.

Includes cameo appearances by Arnie Wormwood, Morty the Dog, and Brad Foster (as a character, not as a contributing artist).

This is not one of my favorite stories. I always felt it was one of my more predictable and conventional pieces. Maudlin too. But, it seems those who are enjoy predictable and conventional comics like this story even if they are uncomfortable with my regular fare.

300 smackeroos is my asking price.

More Original Art!

Michael Dowers just sent me a huge package of original art I had apparently lent to him since the 1980s I had forgotten about. Thanks Michael! What an unexpected arrival in PO Box 390! A treasure trove of memories!

This work will probably be made available for sale very soon, as in starting today or tomorrow.

In taking an inventory here's what I find:

Stories (I will eventually track down the original publication source for all of them):

"No Cigar" (12 p.)
"Dredging" (4 p.)
"Rainmaker Painraker" (12 p.) from Storm Warnings. Conventional mainstream minds liked this piece, but I hated it. Go figure.
"Slim Chance and Fat Fate" (7 p.) also from Storm Warnings.
"Chow Time" (4 p.)
"I Love, Er, Like Seattle!" (2 p.) This was the only piece I drew as an original work just for the Seattle Star that was not a reprint aside from a cover for one issue.

Entire books:
Cranium Frenzy # 7 (1994). (19 p.)
Bezango (1994). (24 p.). I am torn about offering this art for sale for three reasons. First, this comic was later reprinted as a nationally distributed comic under the Starhead label with the title Bezango Obscuro. That jacks it up a notch. Second, as a nationally distributed comic, it left the fold of the obscure and my character Floating Baby Head was widely read. This character is now used in the Disney cartoon Phineas and Ferb, and I am still interested in investigating possible legal action against Walt's regime for stealing my idea. I know, it's a David v. Goliath scenario, and if I try I'll be crushed like an insect in a manner that will ruin me. But that concept was mine first in a national commercial comic and the original art can serve as a court exhibit. I feel very ripped off, even if it was possibly unintentional. Third, the upcoming documentary on NW cartoonists is called Bezango WA and I suspect this "Bezango" term will not go away. If that is the case, I now hold a precious primary source document that should reside in a public depository, like the Washington State University Comix Collection.
Xenophobic Knives and other Love Songs, Pt. 2 (1991) (12 p.)

In addition, Michael sent three pages of an unpublished work called "Outside-In, the History of a Comix Series." Looks like it was drawn in 1989. Michael says he left p. 4 in a scanner, so when he sends that one I'll post the whole thing here. I must admit I have no memory of drawing this thing or why I drew it.

Still deciding whether or not to sell each page individually or as a set. I'm open to offers before I post. You can check out my other art and comix for sale here:

[Update: "I Love, Er, Like Seattle!" is no longer available]

[Another update: "Dredging" has been spoken for]

Makeshift Comics 1996 Catalog

I don't know what Brad Foster and I did in order to make Jefferson Powers go out of his way to get so personal in slamming us and our work, but we found it sort of amusing at the time and enjoyed the status of being officially unhip. Actually I had never heard of Jefferson until this arrived in the mail, so it came out of nowhere for me.

If we were thought of as dinosaurs in 1996 I'm not sure what we would be called in 2011! But I considered it an honor to be lumped together as a one-gag wonder with Brad. That's good company.

It's rather unusual to be so critical of the very books you are attempting to sell, hence my scanning and posting this.

Most of the titles Powers listed had a 1st Fandom House ed. statement. It is interesting he singled out Storm Warnings as a title that stands out, since I consider it one of my weaker, maudlin, and more conventional works. Oh well, I guess our type of comix are not for everyone. Jefferson and I had a brief correspondence after this came out. Everything was fine, there were no hard feelings.

Morty goes Kindle

Someone out there in the wonderful web world has formatted four of Steve's comix for Kindle e-reader use.

If you don't have a Kindle you can still view these books with Kindle for PC.

I grabbed copies and stashed them in our Google Docs, follow links here and feel free to download and enjoy.

Storm Warnings

1st edition, February 1986, Pullman, Washington. 50 copies, white cover, enlarged digest size.

2nd edition, February 1986, Pullman, Washington. 30 copies, white cover, enlarged digest size.

3rd edition, 1990, Seattle, Washington : Starhead Comix. 17 x 13 cm. Color covers.

Available as a print-on-demand title in regular digest size, 1996.

1st Danger Room Reprint edition. July 2005. 5 copies, blue cover, regular digest size.

The nationally distributed Starhead version reprinted the 1980s story "Downtime Laff Riot" and a maze not found in the original edition.

My initials follow me around. I was born in Spokane, Washington. SW. I live in Southwest Washington. SW. Storm Warnings. SW.

I'm not particularly fond of this comic, especially the Rainmaker story. Oddly, it seems to me that out of all my comix, this one is the most acceptable to fans of conventional comic books.

Trivia:

P. 3-4: Mr. Wright also appeared in Delayed Stress Syndrome Funnies.

P. 13: Mukey and porcupines. It doesn't get much better than this, one of the few bright and happy spots in this book. Notice Mukey has a Max Fleischer character type of nose here. He was still under construction.

P. 23: Hey, isn't that ... Brad Foster in that crowd? Why, yes, I think it is!
