Karma Lapel # 5

Here is the cover of Karma Lapel # 5 (winter 1994).

This drawing employs three old tricks I have used for decades:

Crosshatching (a time honored tradition), and then two more I cooked up in the early 1980s and have used since as part of my "look": the double lines and the pointalism rays. I think the most effective use of the latter technique was in the Woofer the Psychic Dog poster.

Heath Row had a nice publication here and he had a knack for writing thoughtful reviews of obscuro comix.

Woofer the Psychic Dog

This play has been mentioned a few times in this blog before. Now it's time to haul out the posters.

Note the name Ken Lonergan on the credits. He went on to be nominated for the Academy Award-- twice, and the Pulitzer once. But I'll always remember him for being part of the NYC cast that appeared in the performance in Olympia, Washington in 1988.

Henard Adventures

Although commercial advertising illustration isn't my deal, I have been known to draw images for the enterprises of my pals. Such was the case in 1983 for Henard Adventures. The contact here was Doug Hendrickson, the same Doug you can read about in How Two Ex-Presidents Went Up My Nose!

My scanner can't handle that obsolete old legal size, so here's a Henard poster in two pieces. In some ways this drawing was sort of a rough draft for the Woofer the Psychic Dog image I drew three years later. I can't remember why I used the name "Arnie Schwartz" when I signed my name. I made up a lot of different names back then.

As anyone who knows me well will tell you, the real humor behind this poster is that I am among the most sedentary of people. If I were a club joiner, the Diogenes Club would be the one for me.

T-shirts

Actually I've covered the story of the OlyBlog t-shirt earlier this year. But it belongs in the gallery of t-shirts anyway.

Michael Dowers made this t-shirt in the 1980s (I think) using the Starhead Comix logo I drew.

From the 2002 AIE Summer Program, including Bezango WA 985 on stage! The images are from the comic series.

A page from Cranium Frenzy # 3 which was captioned "Three seconds in the life of Rindo Bloch" inspired this play by my brother, Bryan, and the original image was used in the t-shirt.

Cast member Jeff Kingsbury went on to be elected to the Olympia City Council for one term and his name became an Oly household word-- and not exactly in way anyone would choose.

I first drew the image for Woofer the Psychic Dog (co-written by Bryan) back in 1986 and it just keeps living on whether it is performed in New York or Olympia. To publicize the 1988 Oly premiere I created a long banner which spanned 4th Ave. about where the Danger Room is today.

Steve Willis Archives v. 4

1st edition, March 1991. Chico, California : Onward Comics. 50 copies. Blue cover, regular digest size.

This final volume of the set is an enlarged version of Stevetreads # 4.

Now, which one of us is going to badger Jeff Nicholson enough to convince him it is time for his return to the comix medium?
