Postcard - Longview, Washington

"Longview Bridge, Longview, Washington. This bridge connects Washington and Oregon across the Columbia River. Many an ocean going ship passes under this bridge to ports up and down the mightly Columbia."

Yes, it does say "mightly Columbia."

1970s.

Favorite Movie Quotes: Ishtar

"Hey, it takes a lot of nerve to have nothing at your age. Don't you understand that? You know most guys would be ashamed, but you've got the guts to just say to hell with it. You say that you'd rather have nothing than settle for less. Understand?"

Postcard - Longview, Washington

"Longview Bridge, Port of Longview and Mt. St. Helens, Washington. Located 66 miles upstream from the mouth of the Columbia River is one of the finest inland ports in the nation. This bridge spans the Columbia and connects Longview to Rainier, Oregon. Magnificent Mt. St. Helens in the background."

Probably from the 1970s, and definitely before Mount Saint Helens blew up in 1980, losing that nice pointed cone top.

Morty Comix # 2540

Morty Comix # 2540 was left at the base of the Bike in the Tree on Vashon Island, Washington.

It looks pretty much the same as it did when I visited the place almost 2 years ago, although a neighboring building that was propped up with 2 x 4s is now gone. And now that I think about it the handlebars are missing from the bike since then as well.

I realize this post will attract two kinds of visitors, so:

Favorite Movie Quotes: Heaven's Gate

"Do you think everything stops because you're getting old?"

Graves of Rev. Robert Edmund Dunlap (1850-1938) and Nellie R. Dunlap (1851-1940), Vashon Island, Washington.

Rev. Dunlap was active in the Prohibition Party and ran for Washington State Governor under that banner in the elections of 1896 and 1900. He also ran as the Prohibition Party candidate for Governor of Arizona in 1916.

Vashon Island was also the home of Prohibition Party presidential candidate Gene Amondson (1943-2009) who ran in 2004 and 2008. I interviewed Gene in 2007.

Postcard - Longbranch, Washington

"Picturesque Puget Sound. While this view shows Longbranch, it is typical of the entire Puget Sound area. Hundreds of protected coves and bays provide haven for the thousands of boaters who navigate these waters every year. This view shows a few of the lucky skippers enjoying their favorite pastime. Mount Rainier stands guardian over all."

From the 1980s. You have to click on and enlarge the image to see Rainier. McNeil, Eagle, and Anderson islands are in the background. McNeil (on the left) is the home of a state prison. Anderson (on the right) was the epicenter point for our delightful 2001 earthquake.

Some must guard while others sleep

Morty Comix # 2539

Morty Comix # 2539 was used as a bookmark for a biography of the film actor Warren Oates. This work was reshelved rather than checked out of a local area library.

Postcard - Long Beach, Washington

"Foam from winter storm. Winter is exciting on the Long Beach Peninsula -- glass floats, unusual driftwood are there for the hardy beachcomber."

Early 1980s?

Hey, and don't forget now you can find Japanese 2011 tsunami debris. That stuff is still showing up on our coast.

The new 248 displaces the old 248

Morty Comix # 2538

Morty Comix # 2538 accompanied me to a Tumwater Dairy Queen for lunch (I had a crispy chicken salad). The comic was deposited under the surface of the table and wedged into a piece of supporting metal.

Favorite Movie Quotes: Being There

"Life is a state of mind."

The best film of the flawed comic genius Peter Sellers. I saw it in Seattle's Fremont district when it was released to theaters in 1980, and just viewed it again after over 3 decades. It holds up over time.

Postcard - Long Beach, Washington

"Long Beach, Washington. Located in the center of the Long Beach Peninsula, a 28 mile Long Beach Driveway on the Pacific Ocean."

Hey, dig those cars, especially that Corvette!

Morty Comix # 2537

Morty Comix # 2537 was slipped inside an issue of Car and Driver in the waiting room of an oil change place in Tumwater, Washington. For some reason Corvettes seem to be popping up on the edges of my life as of late.
