A six-story office complex, cinerama theatre, parking for 7000 vehicles are some of the outstanding features of the Mall. Adjacent to Interstate Highway 5 there are 115 stores (including six department stores) completely heated and air-conditioned for the utmost in shopping convenience."

Postcard - Spokane, Washington

"Spokane, majestic queen of the vast Inland Empire, with a population of 185,000, is the second largest city in Washington. With its lovely park, rushing river, plunging waterfalls, graceful bridges, splendid recreational facilities, fascinating historical sites, ornate old-world cathedrals, modern buildings, flourishing trade and commerce, and surrounding rich farm and forest lands, it is a city of which both tourists and natives alike can be proud as the epitome of America the Beautiful."

Wow. That is some serious postcard prose there. 1970s.

Louis and Keely

Now here's a guy who can blend the Blues with joy. Sort of like when you're walking through New Orleans and smell that unique sweet blend of putridness and perfume and still have have feeling of well being. No other place has this odor. I would move there in a minute if circumstances allowed.

Anyway, Louis Prima was from New Orleans and carried the sound of that great city into his music. I found a clip on YouTube that helps me feel good no matter how sorry I feel for myself.

Here it is, check it out:

Nadine plays only sound cassette, and I have been enjoying Louie and Keely on old technology while driving.

Happy Monday everyone!

At a place about to be gone

Wild Islands

Much to the consternation of my neighbors, I'm sure, I have been reforesting my .68 acre city lot here in McCleary, Washington since 1994. Although I have planted a few more trees, many more have emerged as volunteers and I generally encourage them.

In the last three years I have been experimenting with a concept I call "Wild Islands," i.e., letting wild groundcover take its course, mostly ivy and buttercup.

Aside from the relief of having to mow less moss (we don't grow grass here in the coastal range, only moss), my cats seem to enjoy diving into the wild islands to hunt and, er, to relieve themselves.

I am sure a real landscape architect would have a cardiac arrest while touring my yard, but Tim Burton would love it as a future movie site.

Fifteen Heart Attacks, p. 13-17

The Fifteen Heart Attacks jam is now online. I've set up a special page for it. The most recent contribution is by our friend in Chicago, Jim Siergey, who followed the setup created by Max Traffic.

My immediate goal before leaving for the Obscuro Bezango show next week is to add one more page to this ongoing effort.
