Buttons - Comic Art - 1980s?

Starhead Comix

Looks like this was baked on to some sort of clay. Also, as a subsequent button will show, I am guessing this image was hand made and not the result of mass production.

A very strange building that used to be a quite creepy looking Masonic Temple. It was recently cleaned up and is now a denture place, or something like that. South Bend, Washington.

Morty Comix # 2473

Morty Comix # 2473 was drawn into the sand at the ocean beach, Seaview, Washington. The wind was so incredibly strong that it was more of a threat to the art than the incoming tide!

I have to admit this one is sort of a mystery to me. I have a vague memory this was issued to me as an attendee of some kind of comic event, but beyond that I cannot say. Anyone recognize it?

Morty Comix # 2472

Morty Comix # 2472 was drawn on the morning window condensation of the trailer where my brother Bryan and nephew Zach were staying at the Sou'wester in Seaview, Washington.

Too bad most of the image is lost in the photo. I guess this issue of Morty Comix is mostly lost to history as well. I realize that my current distribution of this title on the face might seem crazy, but on another level I have an audience who reads the Morty the Blog documentation of this artistic communication, although it garners very few responses from the finders. So the comic alone isn't as important as the conceptual placement and documentation, which in itself has become my new art form.

The Myth of Sisyphus by Big Al Camus probably explains my motives here better than anything else.

Back in 1965 we lost our big farm home to fire, and that was followed by seven glorious years with four of us in a trailer about the same size as the one pictured above. Our trailer was a third-hand, falling apart Great Lakes. Our Shetlands would scratch their backs on the end of the mobile home, and our whole house would shake.

But we survived intact and emerged the better for it. My own early lesson here was that material possessions are temporary and can be taken away in a flash. And when that happens, what is left?

Another Weird Gift From My Brother

My brother Bryan gave me this generous gift for my birthday. It is a plastic piggy bank. The little swine is on his back and soccer ball is obscenely placed.

To make matters even more utterly delightful, Bryan once again altered the Goodwill price tag in order to elevate the value of his gift. Also, the thing is covered with a fine petina of some gross, oily, sticky substance.

Charming.

But hey, at least I got 14 cents and a slug out of the deal when I opened it up.

Favorite Movie Quotes: Macbeth

"I have liv'd long enough: my way of life
Is fall'n into the sear, the yellow leaf;
And that which should accompany old age,
As honour, love, obedience, troops of friends,
I must not look to have; but, in their stead,
Curses, not loud but deep, mouth-honour, breath,
Which the poor heart would fain deny, and dare not."

Morty Comix # 2469

Morty Comix # 2469 slid very well behind the coat closet mirror of my tiny trailer at the Sou'wester at Seaview, Washington. It was actually quite a comfortable place, but then again there was only one of me staying there.

For the first time since Prohibition ended, McCleary has no tavern. This particular spot has always been a tavern since 1950, but it has been vacant now for a few months.

Perhaps now that Washington State has legalized pot, this spot could be a retail store for that purpose!

$175 - Original Art - Slim Chance and Fat Fate

The art for "Slim Chance and Fat Fate," the only story from the 1986 comic Storm Warnings that I like.

Set in Eastern Washington State, the visual metamorphosis tale includes Mukey the Mutant Membrane, porcupines, Orville, Thelma, a Morty the Dog coin, a deranged Mr. Zip, truck drivers, and the Acme Correspondence School of Bullfighting.

Felt tip on nonphoto blue, heavy stock paper is uneven, generally measuring 12 x 9.5 in. Seven pages. Some slight discoloration on the top non-art margins of p. 1-2. Page 1 title is actually taped on, which is strange since it doesn't appear to be covering anything. I detect a small amount of whiteout on page 5, panel 6.
