Back in the early 1970s I interviewed several people who were participants or eyewitnesses to the Nov. 11, 1919 Centralia Massacre as well the subsequent 1920 trial in Montesano (a great uncle of mine testified). The fact I was related to people on both sides of this tragic incident, plus those willing to talk to me were looking at the end of their lives and were feeling confessional, gave me a unique and not very admirable view of this blot on Washington State history.

In the course of these interviews, someone gave me this IWW re-issue button.

This small cemetery was relocated when the original spot was reclaimed by the Pacific Ocean. The new location is next to SR 105, and is also literally a stone's throw from the beach.

I have copies from three distinct printings of this 1978 book published by the Olympia School District for early readers. Odd Dog can be counted among Morty the Dog's ancestors. This book has not been fully scanned and posted on this blog.

For some reason my memory tells me this was drawn in 1976, but the 1978 date is on all three printings here.

Blue edition: Photocopy. Cardstock blue cover.

All copies are in fair shape. Copies of the Blue ed. have obviously been in the hands of little readers, but they have survived pretty well.

Goodbye Neil

When Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the Moon in 1969, I wasn't glued to the television. I was camping, sitting by a campfire on a starlit night, staring at Luna in total wonder and amazement, knowing people were up there. The launch of Sputnik, the first satellite, had only been less than a dozen years before, so the enormous technological strides to achieve this goal in such a short time was truly impressive. As Neil said, this really was a giant leap for mankind.

1000 years from now, probably the only event of our time that will earn a notch on any chronology will be the 1st Moon landing in 1969. Real heroes are hard to come by. Neil Armstrong was a real hero.
