McCleary Time Capsule, 1943-1963

McCleary Time Capsule was a chronology column that ran in almost every issue of the McCleary Museum Newsletter from vol. 5, no. 1 (spring 1995) to vol. 10, issue 4 (Dec. 2000).

The column covered the first 20 years of McCleary's transformation from company town to a real municipality.

I was also the editor of the newsletter up to vol. 6, no. 2 (summer 1996).

And yes, this was all done with a photocopier, typewriter, scissors, and gluestick.

Thank you for posting these newsletters online, and a link on Olyblog! I'm the granddaughter of a native of McCleary and lifelong friend of the Crafts, Robert "Bob" Cooper. Actually, he was a relative of one of the Craft brothers, as his older sister Esther married Carroll "Murph" Craft. If my memory isn't off, I believe my grandfather volunteered at the McCleary Museum along with my grandmother Gladys in the early 80s. My grandfather also helped the twins start the Stimulator, and was probably, as Stan would say, "a writer of some of the BS".

Do you know of any other online resources that have McCleary history or documents?

  2. Thanks Erica. I knew the Coopers through their volunteerism at the Museum. Bob was a treasure trove of great stories. McCleary history isn't really very well organized online. It really bugs me so many official sources cite 1958 as the starting year for the Bear Festival when it was really 1959! OlyBlog has a number of posts on McCleary history, but I'd suggest using Google to search the site rather than OlyBlog's own searchbox. Use terms like "Olyblog Sine" "Olyblog McCleary" "Olyblog "Henry McCleary"
